Newcomers Class: Intro to the SCA: New to the SCA? First event, or only been out a couple times? Join us for an Intro to the SCA class at the Newcomer’s Breakfast. Hear a brief history of the SCA and our Kingdom. Get a rundown on who’s who, how to tell people apart, what all the funny names and titles mean, basic event or court etiquette and what to expect, and a translation for all the SCA jargon you’ve been hearing. We’ll talk about different activities and disciplines, personas, garb, how to get started on your own, and different ways you can get involved. This will be an informal class and Q&A session without a strict timeline or structure, so feel free to drop in anytime – but registration is appreciated for approximate numbers, as handouts will be provided for your reference. no cost; unlimited participants. taught by HL Sicillia Torynsdottir
Intro to Cloisonne Enameling: 3 hr. Using just coper and glass, each student will create a custom designed pendant or token. We will cover how to safely apply and melt powder glass into your chosen pattern. Bring your design that will fit into a 1” diameter circle or square shape. Youth are welcome with parental unit. How to wear your veil: 1 hr. An opportunity to try on different types of veil which were used in Western Europe. Learn how to keep a veil securely in place. no cost; unlimited participants. taught by Mistress Coryn of the Wode
Vincente’s Bardic 101: 1 hr. A class for basic bardic busking and performances in the SCA, Tips and Tricks for Success! no cost; unlimited participants. taught by Baron Vicente de Espana
Pillbox, Hennin, Tarpus, Fez, oh my! One method, SO MANY HATS: 1 hr. Need something for your head? Want to learn about millinery techniques? Lets get started on a personalized pattern for YOUR next hat! It might be a 15th C Hennin, an Ottoman Tarpus, a 14th C Norse Pillbox, or even a fez. They all use the same basic pattern technique! For this class, we’re going to start making a pattern that fits you…and then talk about all the next steps in making your hat using either millinery, or dressmaker hat techniques. We will not have time to make your hat in class, but I will go over specific materials you will need so you can make your own hat at home. Participants should bring a pencil, eraser, clear tape, some copy paper and a sewing tape measure. Some of these hats can be constructed entirely by machine, and others are nearly entirely done by hand, so you will needs some basic sewing skills to finish your hat. We will talk about materials, buckram, wiring, trim, padding, lining, sewing and finishing in class! Beginner Loom Weaving Demonstration: 1 hr. Learn the basics of loom weaving. If you have a loom, please bring it, as there are limited looms to use. Spectating is more than welcome! no cost; unlimited participants. taught by Elizabeth of Montengarde
Tayyibe’s Swag Bag- Want to play a Game?: 1 hr. Come learn a table game from the SCA time period or bring a friend to play one you already know. Bring your pretties if you have them..as there may be an opportunity for wagering.(Ship, Captain, Crew anyone?) no cost; unlimited participants. taught by Hatun Tayyibe
Simple T-Tunic or T-Dress: 1 hr. This class is especially for those who have little or no experience making garb. We will cover all the steps (choosing fabric, measuring, cutting, sewing and embellishing). Emphasis will be on how to make a neat and durable neckline. Scribal 101: 2 hr. Introduction to scribal arts for beginners. Learn about paint, tools, the difference between charters and scrolls, and how to paint charters. Cost: $10; unlimited participants. taught by Mu’allima A’isha Rayhana al-Karim
Intro to Silk Painting: 2 hr. Students will learn the basics of silk painting while creating a work of art of their very own. No need for drawing skills. Bring your design (scaled to fit inside an 8” diameter frame) and you’ll be shown how to trace, add resist, and then pain your design. We will discuss how to scale up your project to banner size, and heat setting your colors at home. Youth are welcome with parental unit. Cost: $20; Max 6-8 students. taught by HL Li Xia
Intro to Court Heraldry: 1 hr. How to prepare, organize, and do a court, as well as the roles voice heralds play at an event. no cost; unlimited participants. taught by HL Skald Strifemaker
Belly dancing Basics: 1 hr. Now is your chance to learn to shimmy and sway with style! We will start with the basics and give you moves to fit your level. No previous experience necessary. To be kind to our bodies we will begin with stretches and warm-ups and will learn dance posture to keep our bodies safe. You will learn an assortment of slow and fast movements and we will learn how to put them together. Intro to Heraldry: 1 hr. Intro to Heraldry What is Heraldry, who are heralds, what does “per bend sinister” even mean? Come get a broad discussion/class of Heraldry in the SCA and in history! no cost; unlimited participants. taught by HL Skald Strifemaker
Perfume Class: 1 hr. A brief history of perfumes and making your very own perfume to take home. Cost :$5-$10 depending on oils used; unlimited participants. taught by Duchess Svava Suanhuita
Let’s make Tellerbarets: 1 hr. Sometimes referred to as a ‘pizza hat’, this is probably the most widely recognized German Renaissance hat. Join me as we hand sew a wool tellerbarret. Bring fabric (or fabrics) if you have a certain color of wool (or any fabric) you would like to use. You will need about half a metre. We will learn how to make one and create a hat together! If you have fabric, please bring it along! I will have a small selection on hand to use. no cost if bringing your own fabric. $5.00 if you are using fabric from instructors stash; Max 6 students taught by Lady Kassandra Formica
Knitting Socks or Stockings: 1 hr. Come learn the steps of making a basic sock, along with some history tidbits sprinkled in. By the end of the class, you will have a pattern and the very start of your very own pair of socks. Basic understanding of knitting is required, as this is not a complete beginners’ class. Pattern, yarn & knitting needles will be provided. Cost: $30; Max 5 Students. taught by Lady Jacinda of Valleywold
Let’s Make Pattern Alterations!: 1 hr. Have a sewing pattern but it needs some tweaks? I’ll introduce you to some basic concepts for altering a pattern for style. Due to time constraints, you’ll learn basic concepts you can apply to your patterns back home but will not have the opportunity to alter your personal patterns in-class. Students should bring a pair of paper-cutting scissors, clear tape, pencil, eraser, and a few sheets of copy paper. Rock Painting Activity: 1 hr. Patterns and paint will be available to paint some pretty rocks! Find a rock and bring it with you! You can either keep the finished rock, or hide it on the quad site! no cost; unlimited participants. taught by Mu’allima A’isha Rayhana al-Karim
Beginner Drop Spinning: 1 hr. No experience required. Learn the basics of drafting wool and starting to spin. We will begin with “park and draft” techniques. Learn to start your own yarn adventure! I will have wool and spindles for you to practice on. If you have your own spindle, and you’d like to learn on, bring it along! No cost. 6 students Max. taught by Baroness Nadrah al-Zahara
Shoe Patterning: 1 hr. Bring a friend, pair up and let’s work on the hardest part of making shoes…making the pattern. We will be tracing, measuring, and making duct tape casts. no cost; unlimited participants. taught by Lady Tova Asketill
Blockprinting and Stenciling your Garb for Beginners: 2 hr. Glam up your Garb with blockprinting and stenciling. In this hands on class, I will lead you through the steps to print using blocks and stencils to print on fabric to glam up your garb! This will be a hands on class. We will discuss the techniques, tips and tricks and you will get to try this out for yourself. Here’s a brief overview of what you might learn in such a class: Block Printing: • Ink Application: Discover the best practices for applying ink evenly. • Printing Technique: Master the art of pressing your block onto the fabric for a crisp print. Stenciling: • Stencil Selection: Choose the right stencil for your design. • Painting Skills: Get tips on how to apply paint without bleeding under the stencil. • Layering: Learn how to layer different stencils for a complex design. no cost; Max 5 students. taught by Banug Bushra al Jazerii el Nahr
Scribal 201: Dots, Dashes and Discussion: 1 hr. Intermediate Scribal. You can lay paint…now what? Let’s learn some techniques to take your scribal to the WOW factor! no cost; unlimited participants. taught by Mu’allima A’isha Rayhana al-Karim
Let’s make a packable horned hennin: 1 hr. Need something for your head? Space at a premium when you carpool to events? Make a packable 15th C Horned Hennin! Participants should bring a basic sewing kit. (Needles, thread, scissors, chalk, pins, sewing tape measure.) along with .5m of dense fabric with a very firm body (ex wool melton coat fabric. Lighter colored preferred) and .5m of stable-weave white fabric (ex 3.5oz linen). You will also need appx a meter of synthetic boning or a historically informed alternative. (We will discuss these in class as well.) Students will also need a pencil, eraser, ruler, clear tape, and a few sheets of copy paper, and should have some basic hand sewing skills. Fourteenth-Century Fashion: 1 hr. This is an overview of the clothing styles that are portrayed in 14th century manuscripts. Samples of various garments will be available for examining or trying on. no cost; unlimited participants. taught by Mistress Coryn of the Wode

Story Time with Elina: 1 hr. People talk about their past with stories. They explain their present with stories. They foretell the future with stories. And the best place by the fire was always kept for the Storyteller. Come sit and listen to a story from our past, a tale from our myths. Elina will spin a tale from her repertoire of tales. This is not a class but a chance to relax and enjoy. Please bring a chair or a blanket to sit on.
