Arts & Sciences Class Registrations open (8:00 -10:00)

9:00 Fiber Arts Tent (daily)
location: behind A&S I pavilion; hosted by Alina Kendall OL
The Fibre Arts tent is a place for people to gather and connect to share their interests in the Fibre Arts, including wool processing, spinning, weaving (of various sorts!), knitting or crochet, embroidery, making clothing etc.
It consists of a sunshade erected behind A&S 1. Anyone is welcome to come share, visit, observe, or work on various fibre arts projects. It will be open from the 30 (or possibly the morning of the first) through the 4th. Particular projects under way include working with heritage fleece to spin into yarn for an early Period warp weighted weaving project (in its early stages- this will be a multi year project) and exploration of how to set up a warp weighted loom to weave twill. Other active weaving will also take place. There are no formal classes, but the space is available for projects, gathering and conversation throughout the Quad War. We hope this will be an ongoing feature of Avacal events held at the Quad Site.

10:00 Make your own Gluckshaus game (1 hr)
Gluckshaus (House of Good Fortune) was a gambling game popular in the 15th and 16th centuries, and is an enjoyable pastime at SCA events. Playing for trinkets (e.g. glass “pebbles”) keeps the game fun for everyone. The rules are simple and can be learned while playing. In this class, you will learn to draw the Gluckshaus on a piece of sturdy fabric. The handout will explain the rules, and you can start playing right away. Note: this is a game in which you can win or lose dozens of trinkets at a time….I will have materials for 8 attendees; more may attend if they just want to learn how the game is played. The class cost will cover dice, a bag of trinkets, and the fabric for the game.
cost: $3 participants 8 (or more; see above); taught by Mistress Coryn of the Wode
10:00 Herbalist Plant Walk (90 min)
This class is a walking exploration of edible, medicinal and useful plants of the Quad site. Walking shoes and garb recommended; we will not be bush whacking. You may wish to bring a pencil and something to write with to allow you to take notes on plants found, their locations, and something about them. A plastic bag could be useful if you wish to pick some samples of plants. Similarly, you may wish to take photos of plants of interest to you. We will review do’s and don’ts of plant collection. I will provide copies of the most recent text version of the Quad Site herbal, expanded to include a section on plants to avoid. Note: the computer version is NOT illustrated. A recommended resource for plant identification is Plants of the Boreal Forest and Aspen Parkland, Lone Pine Press 1995.

12:00 Kuteuchi: Japanese Braiding 101: Armour Cords (1 hr)
Japan has a history of intricate braided cords since ancient times. While modern kumihimo braids are made with the foam kumihimo disk, the round-stand marudai, or the tall-stand Takadai, evidence is that that braids in the medieval period were made with a loop-manipulation technique now called Kuteuchi.
In contrast with finger-loop techniques that put a separate loop on each finger, kuteuchi uses two stacks of loops, moving loops from one hand to the other with a simple set of basic moves that add up to intricate and varied results.
A major category of extant medieval cords is Armour lacing. Today we will do a round braid that was used to tie different pieces of a suit of armour to each other and on to the warrior. It could make an attractive cord for a necklace or drawstring, but its strength, flexibility and moderate stretch could make it suitable cord for lacing SCA armour as well.
All materials and equipment provided. No experience necessary. This will serve as a pre-requisite for Thursday’s “Kuteuchi: Japanese Braiding 102: Treasure Braids”

10:00 Intro to Ballet 101 (1 hr)
Class One – Intro to Ballet (“Ballet 101”)
Come learn ballet with me! While this class will focus a bit on skills I believe will be useful for fighters, anyone can join and have fun! For this first class we will go over the very basics, posture, the basic positions of the arms and feet, turnout, and some terminology. We might get some dancing done, but it will be simple.
But, Kaen, you may say, I’m too small/big/clumsy/unbalanced/not graceful/etc etc to do ballet, I promise ballet is for everyone and you can still learn the basics. Ballet is one of those things that can help you understand your body and how it moves, so even if you don’t care much for dancing you still may get something out of it.

12:00 Kuteuchi: Japanese Braiding 102: Treasure Braids (1 hr)
In addition to the simpler braids used for Samurai armour, the artifact record includes many complex, intricate treasure braids. Used to decorate religious regalia or the outfits of court nobles, these braids require multiple braiders working together to manipulate dozens of loops. Let’s try something ambitious!
Pre-requisite: Previous experience with basic kuteuchi techniques, such as any of my previous classes. If you don’t have the experience but want to see what we’re doing, I can put you to work as a beater. Advance registration would be appreciated — warping 28-44 loops per pair will take some time!

Learn: do smooth-edge and raw-edge applique, pin stitch, how to back your pieces to ensure clean edges (the stuff you don’t see on the front – but is important), embroidery stitches: pin, slip, stem, buttonhole, running, couching, satin. Bring sharp scissors with sharp points (embroidery scissors!) – there is a lot of delicate cut work in this technique. The cost for this class will include treated fabric, needles, thread

15:00 Appliqué 101
Appliqué is the technique of cutting out small pieces of fabric (‘slips’) and attaching them to a larger piece of fabric. The term comes from the French verb to apply.
The slips are stitched around the edges with either slip stitch (where the edges have been folded under to form a hem) or stab stitch (where the edges have been cut). This stitching holds the slips in place and can be covered by other more decorative stitches.pplique Embroidery technique class. Some sewing experience is helpful.
